Article by Andrew Purcell, published in the New Scientist:
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20767-rare-genetic-mutation-explains-lack-of-fingerprints.html
Thanks to a rare genetic mutation, a handful of people have no fingerprints. That's not the implausible premise of a crime story but a real condition, and it's more notable for causing confusion at border control than for baffling detectives. Now, geneticists have identified a mutation that may cause it. It is unlikely to save the fingerprintless any time in airports, but it could ultimately lead to treatments for other, more common conditions.
Fingerprints form roughly halfway through a normal pregnancy. Every individual has a unique set – even identical twins – which makes them an ideal way to quickly and easily establish identity.
The biological function of fingerprints remains a matter of controversy. It has long been thought that the ridges improve grip, but a recent study suggests they actually reduce friction between skin and a surface and perhaps increase the sensitivity of touch.
But not in the members of the five families so far diagnosed with adermatoglyphia – an absence of fingerprints. Eli Sprecher at Tel Aviv University, Israel, and colleagues studied three generations in one of these families and found that everyone with the condition shared a mutation in the gene SMARCAD1.
Genetic fingerprint
Gabriele Richard, who researches dermatology and genetics at genetic testing company GeneDX in Gaithersburg, Maryland, points out that the finding is unlikely to help those with adermatoglyphia to grow fingerprints – but Sprecher says there might be wider implications.
"Without this family, we simply would not know what SMARCAD1 is," he says. Studying the proteins generated by such new genes "may lead to the development of treatments for more common conditions", he says.

I was interested to read the palms of The Apprentice winner Tom Pellereau, 32, when I met him and the other finalists last week. A ring on his little finger shows a knack for money-making yet he will feel restrained in his career until 34 years due to an island on the fate line. His time with Sir Alan Sugar will be important for honing his craft but at 34 he will experience a transformation of fortunes when restrictions are removed and the fate line branches. From memory, he also has a peacock's eye on his left ring finger: a sure sign of an innovator and someone destined to become an expert in his field. His sensitivity will be a plus when working with others.
The runners up:
Jim Eastwood, 32
Straight little fingers means he is honest and has a lot of heart. He's a team player and very hands on. He also has a peacock's eye on left ring finger meaning his life purpose is of a pioneer and innovator, though he will often feel that people don't understand him due to his unusual approach. He's already had a lot of expansion in his career at 27 years and this is set to leap forward again in three year's time.
Susan Ma, 21
Susan's small hands show she is dynamic and impatient. Her varied fate line indicates lots of change and varied experience in her working life throughout her 20s. Tented arches on some of the fingerprints show she knows her stuff and will become very business-savvy, but an area of growth will be getting herself heard and taken seriously. Composite whorls on the fingerprints mean she has an ability to see all sides of an issue (similar to lawyers, journalists and counsellors) but this same quality can lead to indecision.
Helen Milligan, 30
A whorl on the fingerprint of the right thumb and loops on the fingers means that it is Helen's destiny to be successful and the foundation for this success is her people skills. She has already gained a huge amount of experience in her 20s (shown by Ladder of Success / Pagoda on right hand), which began at 23 years (branching of fate line). The new fate lines at 30 years show that, regardless of her runner up position in this series of The Apprentice, Helen's career has a fresh start and she is beginning a very rewarding cycle of learning. Her involvement in this successful TV series will set the tone for her career in the rest of her 30s.

Last week the Daily Mail asked me to look at two anonymous hands and provide an analysis. In today's newspaper, the light-hearted 'Royalty's future is in their hands: William and Kate analysed by palm reader' is a very edited version of my original feedback.

According to today's Daily Mail newspaper: "...scientists have noticed an extraordinary link between the ratio of two digits on the hand — the ring and index fingers, known in scientists’ jargon as 2D and 4D — and a whole host of seemingly unrelated traits.
"Evidence is growing that this ‘digit ratio’, especially when applied to the right hand, is a fundamental indicator of sexuality, aggression and diseases suffered by men"

I registered at the Wellcome Library today to access some of their Medieval manuscripts on palmistry and palm reading today. The Collection includes a fascinating collection of rare books. You can search for items online, then the helpful libarians dig them out for you and keep them until your visit (up to two weeks). It helped that the assistant librarian I spoke with is a 'physiognomist' (physiognomy is the name for the 'study of the face' that was - along with palmistry and astrology - an intregral part of medicine until Victorian times).

Palmistry is a great aid to self-analyisis as it draws your attention to certain characteristics that may be concealed in day-to-day life. I have put together a checklist of signs that relate to particular persinality traits. Open the PDF and have a little fun getting to know yourself, your friends and youtr colleagues better.

As found on both Britney Spears and Tony Blair, the Simian Line (where the head and heart line are one) merges mental and emotional energy. Owners have an intense focus (often to the detriment of other areas of their life) and can find it difficult to switch off. People who possess one or two Simian Lines' have the potential to go far because of their drive and intensity, yet can be controlling. Their charisma and potential for greatness is tempered by tunnel vision, evangelical zeal and an inability to find peace in relationships. A mixed blessing.

My recent palmistry workshops in London have been very enjoyable (- fortunately for both students and teacher!). The feedback I have had from students is encouraging too (to read it, click here) so I have added extra dates. If you wish to join the 5th June Level 1 workshop, please hurry as there are only two places left. Read more on both Levels in blog below or click the 'Learn Palmistry' links in 'Categories' on right...

Today's palmistry workshop built on the foundations of Level 1 by introducing unusual markings, minor lines and finger print meanings, as well as theories and concepts that try to explain how palmistry works. We also looked at the pioneering work of Dr Richard Unger who has devised a system of finger print analysis that can be used to assess the 'Soul's Agenda' (life purpose, challenges and lessons). The first of my regular Learn Palmistry workshops in London. I had the aim of helping students get to grips with palm reading basics in a day. I must say I enjoyed teaching and the students seemed to find the day rewarding, which was my intention. ...Phew!

As this was the last 'Lost Art of Palmistry' Meet Up of 2009, about 10 of us enjoyed a palmistry quiz with prizes, Q&A and mingling in the downstairs bar of the Old China Hand after the talk. (Old China Hand, 8 Tysoe Street, London EC1R 4RQ. Map). Everyone who attended received a complementary gift. It was a pleasant end to a year of monthly (or weekly) LAP MeetUps... 2) Love and relationships
3) Dermatoglyphics and fingerprints
4) Special Markings
5) Miscellaneous - plus quiz with prizes

"Firstly, thank you so much for a really, thoroughly enjoyable evening last night: My Ma and I both thought it sublime and informative. It was a genuine pleasure to meet you and the fact you are not some kooked out space cadet whacked on acid and ley lines made the whole evening all the more enjoyable. I do believe in karma, fate etc and perhaps the Old China Hand played a part in this…"

I gave a 45 minute palmistry introduction to the Lost Art of Palmistry Meet Up Group. This month's subject was 'Love in the palm of your hand – how to tell if your love will last." Guests also received private 5-10 minute palm readings. We looked at emotional types, heart line (showing how people connect with others and our emotional state throughout our lives), as well as compatibility between the different types.
The Lost Art of Palmistry events ran throughout 2009 at The Old China hand, 8 Tyoe Street, London EC1R 4RQ (- a lovely little oriental inspired bar in a pretty part of Clerkenwell).

My weekly Lost Art of Palmistry event is a shot in the arm. I am stretched, prooded and tested by my intelligent and enquiring guests. I definitely got back what I put in to these evenings and they have been well worth the effort. Got a five star rating on Meetup.com too.
"I am thankful to Amber for being so generous to her clients by giving her valuable time and energy. I feel that we all got more than we deserved. Yes, I would certainly recommend this event to my friends. It's fascinating how Amber can read lines and interpret so well to the subject's condition. She's been truly giving." Online survey feedback (anonymous) from guest on 15.04.09
"I felt very welcome; it was a lovely pub and Amber was very welcoming. Amber clearly knew what she was talking about. I could have listened to her for hours! ...The experience was amazing, I learned so much and could have spent a lot longer learning about it. The palm reading session just blew me away! I thought that I was just a big emotional mess that didn’t know what she [sic] wanted but the reading kinda helped sort my head out and see things more clearly - that probably sounds really cheesy! But I would definitely like a proper reading, I could have stayed there for hours. It is so, so interesting. I would recommend it to sceptics. An amazing experience, thank you very much Amber!!!""The venue was a glorious find! I thought the atmosphere and room were beautifully presented, Amber was a joy to listen to and very welcoming. The personal palm reading was the icing on the cake :-)" By email, April 2009

I hosted The Lost Art of Palmistry evenings every Wednesday from 1st April throughout 2009 at The Old China Hand, Islington, London. I gave a free 30 minute introduction to the wonders of palmistry plus personal 5 minute palm readings to members of the public who were new to palm reading.
The palmistry events were well attended and enjoyable. It was interesting to meet and be challenged by new Meetup.com members. It was an opportunity for me to sharpen up my palmistry skillss and deal with difficult questions. The meet up group was very mixed; ranging from the curious to those who already have some knowledge.
