Exhibition at the Orleans House Gallery, Riverside, Twickenham, TW1 3DJ from 5 October 2013 - 26 January 2014
With no training and no aspirations to fame, Madge Gill produced thousands of ink drawings during her lifetime. Her work remains an enigma: is it true she was inspired by an ethereal spirit guide? Was she genuinely in touch with 'the beyond', or was art-making a form of self therapy?
Orleans House Gallery hosts a major retrospective exhibition of the work of Madge Gill (1882 - 1961). The exhibition is funded by a People Award from the Wellcome Trust and features over 100 original artworks, and contextual photographs and documents. Madge Gill was championed and collected by Jean Dubuffet, who coined the term ‘art brut’ (raw art), the precursor to the term ‘Outsider Art’. Gill is considered the most important, influential and recognised British woman ‘outsider artist.’ This project explores Gill’s work, history and psychic / mediumistic context in-depth, in order to question the use of such terms, whilst celebrating the benefits of creativity for wellbeing.
Working mainly on paper, card and textiles, Gill used pen to create maze-like surfaces with a glittering, almost hallucinatory quality that often reveal a female face. Ranging from postcard size to over 10 metres long, her work immerses the eye in a dark world of mystery, beauty and obsession.
Curators have worked with psychologists, medical historians, biographers, art historians and art psychotherapists to bring different approaches to Gill together within the exhibition and accompanying catalogue. This exhibition is a must-see for all those interested in art, psychology, spiritualism, social history or all of the above.

Above: Eagle-headed protective spirit (Assyrian, about 855-860BC From Nimrud, northern Iraq).
The use of magic to protect buildings and their owners was an old tradition in Mesopotamia (Assyria). Images of supernatural creatures (protective spirits) would be buried under doorways or set up at the entrances of palaces and temples. Their supposed magical strength would frighten away evil-wishing demons. This figure with wings may possibly be a supernatural creature known as "apkallu". It wears a horned headdress to show its divinity and carries buckets and what appears to be fir cones used to sprinkle, presumably, water from the bucket for purification.

In Egyptian mythology, Sekhmet /ˈsɛkˌmɛt/[1] was originally the warrior goddess as well as goddess of healing for Upper Egypt. She is depicted as a lioness, the fiercest hunter known to the Egyptians. Myth told that her breath formed the desert. She was seen as the protector of the pharaohs and also led them in warfare.

The publisher of the Daily Mail has agreed to pay "substantial" damages to psychic Sally Morgan after an article suggested she had "perpetrated a scam" on a theatre audience, a judge at the High Court has ruled. Associated Newspapers has apologised to Sally Morgan and also agreed to pay her legal costs. Mrs Morgan is a psychic who had become well-known through TV and theatre appearances. Her lawyer, Graham Atkins, had told the court: "It was following a theatre performance in September 2011 in Dublin that an article appeared in the Daily Mail which, in the context of a general attack on psychics as being charlatans, accused Mrs Morgan specifically of having used a hidden earpiece during her performance in order to receive instructions from her team which she then repeated on stage as if she had received them from the spirit world." Mrs Morgan's website said she was "overjoyed" by the result. For the full BBC online article, please see: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22988215.

Saw these great tea boxes in The People's Supermarket today.
I read the anti-oxidant rich tea leaves from these pretty Rooibos 'Roispresso' drinks at The Trafalgar, Trafalger Square, London, this morning. Thank you Kara, Patricia and Kostja.
"A much belated thanks for the reading - I was away on holiday when I received it and it makes a world of sense, as always! Thanks for your insight and help with my question, it is much appreciated." Distant Reading, February 2013.
"I wanted to say belated thank you for reading for me in December. I am happy to inform you that I have successfully received the visa, and as you said in the reading, I'm likely to leave the country in the end of April. Firstly I am amazed that you saw me going to America in the reading 6 months ago! Since then I had started to have a hope for the move, therefore when the opportunity did came along, I had no hesitation to grab it. I really appreciate your readings in the last two years. I have had an amazing transformation, I am now a very confident, secure person who trusts herself." Psychic reading, London, January 2013
"Thank you for reading for me on Saturday. It has been very empowering and healing... I send you my best wishes and I'm sure I'll see you again!" Psychic reading, London, January 2013

"Excellent reading. I really felt like you got me. I feel very positive about the future and stronger in myself. Also I now know to trust my instinct a lot more. Thanks so much Amber, you know how to cut through clouds and make things easier to understand." Client feedback via online form, January 2013
"I found this an inspiring and eye-opening experience which gave me a shot in the arm at a time when I am feeling a bit lost personally. Amber was a very welcoming host and made sure that I understood what was happening every step of the way. I have been left with a lot to reflect on which may well yet alter the course of my life and am glad I made the decision to visit." Client feedback via online form, December 2012
"That was my very first palm reading and I have to say that I am fully satisfied and positively impressed. First of all, Amber is very friendly and her place very welcoming, so you feel directly comfortable. Without knowing me at all, Amber’s interpretation of my personality, past history and present situation were extremely true and accurate! Amber also gives general predictions for your 6 months - 10 years future, she is very impartial and speaks very clearly. The recording of the session is sent the day after which is great, because in one hour you receive that much information, that you can hardly process all of them. Amber is very impartial but she is also happy to give pieces of advice, so you are sure you get the most benefit from the session." Client feedback via online form, December 2012

Architect Nicholas Hawksmoor's
churches are said to be linked to an intricate pattern of ley lines and
sacred geometry criss-crossing across London. In Radio 4's Saturday Live
programme (22.12.12) John McCarthy walked through the East End of London from Hawksmoor's Christ Church
in Spitalfields to Wapping while discussing psychogeography with author Iain Sinclair. (This Hawksmoor interview
will be available online from BBC's Listen Again archive for over a year, if you are interested).

Psychogeography utilises romantic, gothic and occult ideas to describe the energetic resonence of a city. The language weaves Fortean and occult ideas (like earth mysteries, ley lines, and chaos magic) in an interpretation of the modern urban landscape which is magical and interesting. The term 'psychogeography' was defined in 1955 by Guy Debord as “the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behavior of individuals”. Since then, the complex topic that has developed quite a following, particularly amongst writers and artists. For more information, you could read Peter Ackroyd's 'London: A Biography' and Merlin Coverley's 'Psychogeography'.

Sacred geometry is used in the planning and construction of religious structures such as churches, temples, mosques, monuments, altars; as well as for sacred spaces such as temenoi, sacred groves, village greens and holy wells, and the creation of religious art. In sacred geometry, symbolic and sacred meanings are ascribed to certain geometric shapes (polygons, triangles, squares, hexagons), numbers and proportions.
St Paul's floorplan by Wren and photo from above by Aggiemania.
There is a star polygon at the centre of St Paul's Cathedral, under the dome, which is the main ceremonial area for church and congregation. It is very difficult to find a photograph of it anywhere on the Web (- if you do then, please let me know!) and photography is not allowed inside the cathedral so I was unable to take a photo of it myself. However, the blurry photo above gives an indication of what it looks like.
If you are curious about the subject you may be interested to read author Chris Street's The Ley Lines of London, which examines extensively London's energy lines and sacred geometry.

The magnificent entrance to St Paul's Cathedral by Sir Christopher Wren...
Despite flocks of visitors the interior remains a place of prayer and contemplation and is very beautiful and calm, with stupendous murals and statues...
The dome is truly awe-inspiring. It's height and the intricate detail of the artwork means you can sit and gaze upwards until your neck hurts... It is one of the largest cathedral domes in the world and weighs 65,000 tonnes.
The view of London at the top of the tower is magnificent. However, if you are scared of heights be prepared for a trepidatious climb up an occasionally tremulous iron staircase inside the walls of the dome. Before you reach the vewing balcony you are permitted to stand over and look down through a small window in the floor to the ceremonial space nearly 365 feet below.
